Born in Jamaica, Sasha-Gay Lewis is an Emmy- nominated producer-writer, and multi award-winning director whose work is grounded in themes of identity, belonging, survival, redemption, and resistance.
Her directing work includes the documentary "The Incursion " - which won Best Documentary at the Caribbean Tales Film Festival, Honorable Mention at DOC LA, an Impact Doc award, was an official selection at the Pan African Film Festival; and one of 6 films selected to launch a Jamaican showcase at the 2019 International Film Week in Wurzburg, Germany, the 1st such showcase in the festival’s 47-year history.
She also directed "Surviving Suicide "- the inspiring story of three-time suicide survivor Anthony Rodriquez; and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) I Look Up selected films "The People's Vision" and "Homeward Bound." Surviving Suicide is used as a suicide awareness training tool in high schools across Santa Barbara by the Santa Barbara Response Network.
Her producing and writing work includes the KCET distributed doc series "Where Cultures Collide," MTV’s "16 & Pregnant," Youtube Original’s Emmy-nominated doc series "Glad You Asked S2," the HBO Original documentary "Reopening Night," ESPN's "Skin in the Game," and as a production manager on the Gemini Award-nominated, TV 5 distributed doc series "Life’s Rituals [La Vie En Quatre Temps]." Additionally, she is an award-winning audio producer, and the creator of the lifestyle and film podcast "This Immigrant Life Podcast."
Her work has been featured in Deadline, Hollywood Reporter, Medium, Variety, KTLA, ByBlacks, and Jamaica Gleaner, among others. Sasha holds an MFA in Documentary Filmmaking from the New York Film Academy and a BA in Media and Communications [Honors] from the University of the West Indies.
Sasha is a former board member of the Documentary Producers Alliance, where she played a pivotal role in shaping its mission, vision, values, and existing policies. She is a member of the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE), a former steering committee member of the Independent Documentary Directors, a Firelight Media Documentary Lab Fellow, a Sundance Uprise Fellow, and a member of Brown Girls Doc Mafia.
She is the founder of the female led production company Phoenix where she provides creative producing consultancy services, wrap-around development and production support to creatives and companies.
